Counselling Services for International Students Studying in Hungary

How student counselling works

Student counselling services are available free of charge to all students who own a valid student ID card and have registered for university, college or vocational training ('OKJ course') in Hungary. University applicants may also be eligible to use certain facilities, such as career guidance. Should you wish to use such a service, you can ask for more information at the university where you wish to enrol.

What student counselling is about

Student counselling is here to help you when you feel stuck or wish to develop your skills in a certain area. Student counselling is most often referred to as an umbrella term, and it can include a number of services: psychological counselling, career counselling, equal opportunities counselling, study skills support, peer support, and so on. Universities may differ in the type and number of services they offer from the list above.

How you can find these services

Most higher education institutions run their own counselling centres, a list of which can be found here, sorted geographically. It is important, however, that not all universities provide counselling in foreign languages, the list of such services is updated regularly on this website. The working language in student counselling may vary as well. You will mostly meet counsellors who speak English, and in some cases other languages as well, e.g. German, French or Spanish. Many universities have peer counsellors as well, comprised of mostly senior students, whose task is to help other students get their bearings and adjust to university life. They may provide a more informal relationship than a psychologist and can advise you on exams, social activities or other issues at your university. If you do not seem to find a mental health service at your university, you can get in touch with your contact person at the international office, they may provide you with the information you need to find these facilities.
